Yes, it is worth getting pet insurance.

  2. The Blonde Border Collie says:

If you don’t have $2000 + saved in an account for an emergency, then yes, it is worth it.

  3. bells3011 says:

    It depends.

The only negative that I found was that our local vets still expect payment upfront. The insurance company reimburses you after some time and up to a certain amount.

We’re not getting it right now, but I’m able to come up with money for any needed Vet visits.

I don’t have pet insurance. I got a quote on how much my pup would cost / month and put it into an emergency savings account if something were to happen. That way if I don’t use the money it’s still mine, not some insurance companies.

    HOWEVER

I have enough money to pay for a $2,500+ surgery or treatment at any time. If I didn’t have that kind of cushioning in my bank account I would not even consider turning down an insurance policy.

Only if you anticipate having major vet expenses (leg break, hip surgery etc.). Check out the excess of most companies. I can tell you most of my individual vet visits over the years have been way below the figure they quote. You’d be far better off keeping your money in your Bank Account, buying your puppy from a reputable breeder who is known for producing good stock, and building up a relationship with your vet so should the worst happen, they will allow you to stage pay a large bill. People might persuade you otherwise, but big bills don’t often happen – I know, I’ve been keeping hounds since 1972.

Insurance companies are not in the business of keeping you going and they will wriggle out of paying up, if they can.

It depends. Is your dog a high risk dog? Ie, a breed known for health problems, an agressive breed, prone to injury, etc. You may want to go a year; add up how much you spend on your dogs vet bills, and then figure if you are paying more for the insurance than you are anually on the bills.
It is a good safety net becasue accidents and injuries happen, but it can be a sligh financial burden otherwise.
I looked into getting pet insurance for my two dogs because one of my dogs has allergies, and I am constantly having to purchase meds. However, after reviewing the past two years vet bills compared to how much the insurance would cost for a year; I realized it was actually cheaper for us not to have it.
I would recommend it to anyone, but I just can’t afford it myself right now.

  7. Away With The Fairies says:

Yes! Nothing to do with vets bills – but imagine if your dog caused a road accident or bit a child. Without insurance the ensuing claims could cost you everything!

  8. I_Love_Dark_Chocolate says:

Yes. But you need to find a good company. Do some re-search on different companies. I found a website with reviews for all pet insurance companies. VPI was one of the worst. Embrace was one of the best, up there with Pet Plan.
It is worth it. You NEVER know when something will come up.

  9. Cutiepie2009 says:

Yes, because I didn’t use to have pet insurance, and my dog had to have his leg amputated, and it cost us nearly £2,000. Our vet said if we had got pet insurance we cou’ldve saved £1,300

  10. Kerrie S says:

Definitely worth getting pet insurance, think how you would feel if your dog got ill and you couldn’t afford the treatments it needed. It’s much easier to pay a little money each month than it is to be told you need to find £2000 or more for an emergency operation, also if your dog ever needs on-going medication you will be covered and not need to worry.
    Hope this helps.

  11. luvekitkat says:

yes. if ur dog gets sick alot.

  12. justestin says:

    Yes – it’s even worth it for a cat – have you ever met a POOR vet……… ! ! !

  13. bigbossmamma says:

Vet bills are extortionate if you don’t have pet insurance.
I would recommend it, especially if it is a pedigree dog you have. Mongrels tend to be a bit more hardy and don’t have so many health problems.

  14. anwen55 says:

I’ve never had pet insurance – if you have more than 3 or 4 dogs it’s just too expensive. I prefer to pay money into a separate account for emergencies (never had to use it yet).
Like any insurance, it’s a gamble but if you really couldn’t afford a big bill, it might be better to insure – you never know.
If you do decide on insurance, make sure you read the small print, you get what you pay for in insurance like anything else.
ETA: There is absuloutely NO proof that mutts are healthier than purebreds.

  15. woobie says:

yes please get it,just after I purchased my dog he was very ill, thank goodness I had him insured,as it would have cost £600 plus

    Woobie

  16. Memphis Belle says:

    It is worth it…..?

Veterinary bills can be hideously expensive & come out of the blue to hit you straight in the wallet.

    Cancer
    Dilated Cardiomyopathy
    Thyroid
    Joint tears

My Dobermanns {apart from one} have all come from responsible breeders who health test their dogs, but they nevertheless were diagnosed with the above.

I have never had to wonder if I can afford to pay for the very best in veterinary treatment, that was in the best interest of my dog, because they were insured. I have also had zero debt, because I did not have to rely of a credit card or loan.

My insurance provider has **never** attempted to wriggle out of paying a claim & settles the claims quickly.

The level of cover & excess {amount you pay per condition} varies from policy to policy, so it is worth shopping around & comparing what is on offer.

It is worth it? To me, yes.

  17. poodle power says:

Yes yes yes it is one of those things you hope you never need but if you do you are very glad you have it. I would never own a dog without it for thoughs expected vet bills. Most insurnacer don’t just cover vet bills they also cover third party accidents and other things.

  18. andrewvfrench says:

It’s one of those things, you’ll think it’s a waste of money until you need it then you’ll be thankful you had it when you see the bill, I just insured my dog after it became sick and need some antibiotics, it cost a fortune. I’m now insured throgh http://www.petpalsdirect.co.uk their cover seemed pretty good for the price, so I would suggest you get some but weigh up the price and cover, you mght not need an over the top policy but it all depends on what you want to pay.
